Ant Exterminator

Although these critters may be small, they cause major headaches around Southeastern Texas. We’re talking about ants, bugs that have lived on earth for over 100 million years and have adapted to carry as much as 50 times their weight. They’re known for their annoying bites and the damage they can do to property, but these insects may be an even greater problem than you know.

Fire Ants are a major nuisance. They’re originally from South America and have been spreading throughout Texas since the 1950s and now cover most of the state. They’re extremely aggressive, and their behavior impacts other animals much larger than them, like quail, deer, lizards, songbirds, and horn toads. And, of course, they pack a painful bite for humans, leaving behind itchy and swollen welts.

Scratching can create open wounds that can then get infected, something ants cannot relate to since they create their own germ-fighters to protect against infection and have built-in combs to groom themselves with. Around 1% of people are hypersensitive to their venom and can wind up hospitalized. The very young and the elderly are at risk for bad reactions too. They tend to bite in swarms, which worsens symptoms. They do that by sensing vibrations and movement, which trigger them to bite and sting.

There is another species in southeast Texas that rivals Fire Ants. A South American pest, the Tawny Crazy Ant, has also shown up recently in the Conroe and Montgomery area. They have venom and biological adaptations that let them fight off even Fire Ants. That may sound like a good thing, but the problem is that these invaders out-compete many other ants for food and resources. That drives out native species, reducing the population of arthropods that feed other animals like birds. They’re also challenging to get rid of, with massive populations that resist pesticides. These groups of ants are known to invade buildings and even destroy electrical devices and short-out motors.

Then, of course, there’s the one that tops the others: Carpenter Ants. There are 18 types in Texas, the most common of which is a little larger than a quarter-inch long, with a black tail and wings and a reddish-brown head and body. Most people notice them around late winter or early spring when they start mating and forming new colonies. Although they don’t eat wood as termites do, they’ll gnaw it into shavings to build nests in and around your home. That happens most often around doors, window frames, and walls. They usually live in trees, but if they venture into your home or business, they can quickly become a problem.
