Yard Pests Control

Texas is famous for a lot of things. We’ve got great barbecue, longhorn cattle, and real cowboys. We’re a music mecca, a tourist destination, a region rich with oil, and a rich history. But there’s something else we have that’s not something to brag about, pests.

The Pests In Our Yards

Our yards are a mecca of an entirely different sort, attracting many invasive insects and animals that cause problems. Some of those critters might just be passing through, but some are taking up residence, and some might just be looking for ways to get into your house, too.

Pest problems in the yard are typically of two types: the creatures damaging your property and the ones endangering your health. Sometimes, they are the same. Rodents like roof rats, for example, can make a mess of your yard and also carry diseases. But the yard pests that specifically endanger your health are often the most concerning. After all, you can repair property damage. That cannot always be said for our health. Some pest-borne illnesses don’t go away.

The most common yard pests in our area that affect our well-being are mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks.

Mosquitoes

The most common mosquito found around Montgomery and Conroe counties is the Asian Tiger or Aedes albopictus, which is one bad bug to have hanging around. If you have a large mosquito presence around your home, you could be in danger of contracting some debilitating diseases, including EEE, West Nile virus, Chikungunya, and dengue. This mosquito also carries Zika, a virus that causes birth defects.

Fleas

These acrobatic, predatory parasites occupy our yards because they are hunting us. Fleas feed on blood and need it to reproduce. Typically, they wait for a warm body to walk by and then jump on. Amazingly, a flea can leap more than 100 times its length. And when a flea bites you, it could transmit a dangerous cocktail of viruses. They transmit plague, typhus, cat scratch fever, and more.

Ticks

We often hear “fleas and ticks” referenced together, and that’s because they are common menaces that target us and our pets the same way and inhabit the same environments. If fleas are waiting for you in the yard, so are ticks, and they also need blood to survive. Ticks are not jumpers like fleas, however. Instead, they loiter in a well-trafficked area with their limbs outstretched, waiting for you to walk by so they can latch on. Ticks also spread many diseases that cause serious illnesses, the worst of which is Lyme disease.
